“Intestine, Brain and Hormones”

The Conference Room at HPA Gambelas, in Faro, hosted a multidisciplinary session that brought together specialists to discuss the complex connection between the digestive system, the nervous system and hormonal balance.

The event opened with remarks by Dr Rita Herculano, Coordinator of the Gastroenterology Department at HPA Gambelas, and Dr Mónica Velosa, President of the NeuroGastroenterology Section of the Portuguese Society of Gastroenterology, who set the tone for a morning dedicated to sharing knowledge and scientific evidence. The topic of Irritable Bowel Syndrome and the brain–gut axis in this condition was addressed, with Dr Leandro Valdemar as the speaker, focusing on the impact of stress and insomnia on digestion.

The intestinal microbiota, composed of “trillions of bacteria”, was the focus of Dr Ana Margarida Vieira, who clarified the role of these microorganisms in our health.

This was followed by a presentation from Dr Maria João Paes on the validity of food intolerance tests. In the field of treatment, the importance of the FODMAP diet was highlighted by nutritionist Ana Rita Horta, along with stress management through mind–body techniques presented by psychologist Inês Dimas. Physiotherapist Ana Rita Avelino brought an innovative perspective on the importance of movement and the pelvic floor in the context of intestinal conditions/dysfunctions.

The final moments centred on distinguishing between Inflammatory Bowel Diseases and Irritable Bowel Syndrome, as well as on women’s health, with Dr Sílvia Vieira (Gynaecologist/Obstetrician) explaining why women are more affected by these conditions. The event concluded with a message on colorectal cancer screening, delivered by Dr Catarina Cunha, and practical advice on bowel preparation by Nurse António Matias.

This event reaffirmed the teams’ commitment to health literacy and the continuous training of their professionals, in a field that is increasingly supported by scientific evidence and recognised for its importance to overall health.
